The REACH Regulation (Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Substances and Preparations) was created with the aim of ensuring the protection of human health and the environment and the free movement of substances, on their own, in mixtures or in articles, by promoting the competitiveness and innovation of companies.
REACH obliges all companies manufacturing or importing substances in the European Union in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year to submit a registration to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), prohibiting the commercialisation of unregistered substances.

It will therefore be the responsibility of manufacturers, importers and downstream users of these substances to ensure that they only manufacture, market or use substances that do not adversely affect human health or the environment. One of the key documents for doing this effectively is the Safety Data Sheet.
