Under the REACH Regulation, not only substances and mixtures are subject to regulatory obligations. <strong>Articles<\/strong> may also be affected, particularly when they contain <a href=\"https:\/\/servireach.com\/blog\/lista-de-sustancias-candidatas\/\">Substances of Very High Concern<\/a> (SVHCs) or are designed to release substances during normal use.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one of the most common challenges for companies is determining what qualifies as an article and when REACH obligations apply.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an article under REACH?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">REACH defines an <a href=\"https:\/\/servireach.com\/blog\/y-si-vendo-articulos-me-aplica-el-reach\/\">article<\/a> as an object that is given a <strong>specific shape, surface or design<\/strong> which determines its function to a greater degree than its chemical composition.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, articles are products whose function is primarily determined by their shape or intended use rather than by the substances they contain.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of articles<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common examples of articles include:<\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"background-color:#7bdbb55c\" class=\"wp-block-list has-background\">\n<li style=\"line-height:1.6\">Furniture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"line-height:1.6\">Clothing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"line-height:1.6\">Toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"line-height:1.6\">Electronic components<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"line-height:1.6\">Packaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all these cases, <strong>the product&#8217;s function is determined by its design rather than its chemical composition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is not an article?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not always easy to distinguish an article from a substance or a mixture. For example: <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paint \u2192 <strong>mixture <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detergent \u2192 <strong>mixture <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfume \u2192 mixture<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, these mixtures may ultimately become part of an article. In other words, some products may consist of a <strong>combination of an article and a mixture<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Borderline cases: article, mixture or combination?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some products cannot be easily classified as articles and require a more detailed assessment.
