{"id":16596,"date":"2026-04-27T10:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T08:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/servireach.com\/blog\/uk-reach-what-it-is-and-its-main-obligations\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T10:58:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T08:58:34","slug":"uk-reach-what-it-is-and-its-main-obligations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/servireach.com\/en\/blog\/uk-reach-what-it-is-and-its-main-obligations\/","title":{"rendered":"UK REACH: what it is and its main obligations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following the United Kingdom\u2019s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit), the country left the EU REACH system and developed its own regulatory framework: <a href=\"http:\/\/Regulation%20(EC)%20No%201907\/2006%20of%20the%20European%20Parliament%20and%20of%20the%20Council%20of%2018%20December%202006%20concerning%20the%20Registration,%20Evaluation,%20Authorisation%20and%20Restriction%20of%20Chemicals%20(REACH),%20establishing%20a%20European%20Chemicals%20Agency,%20amending%20Directive%201999\/45\/EC%20and%20repealing%20Council%20Regulation%20(EEC)%20No%20793\/93%20and%20Commission%20Regulation%20(EC)%20No%201488\/94%20as%20well%20as%20Council%20Directive%2076\/769\/EEC%20and%20Commission%20Directives%2091\/155\/EEC,%2093\/67\/EEC,%2093\/105\/EC%20and%202000\/21\/EC%20(Text%20with%20EEA%20relevance\">Regulation (EC) No 1907\/2006<\/a> \u2013 UK REACH.<a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>This regulation applies in <strong>Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales)<\/strong>, while <strong>Northern Ireland continues to follow EU REACH<\/strong>, creating a differentiated regulatory landscape within the UK itself.<\/p>\n\n<p>UK REACH maintains the same principles as EU REACH, aiming to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemical substances.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who does UK REACH apply to?<\/h2>\n\n<p>UK REACH applies to companies established in Great Britain that:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manufacture chemical substances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Import substances from the EU or from third countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use substances in industrial processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>As in the EU, registration is mandatory for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of <strong>\u22651 tonne\/year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Substance registration under UK REACH<\/h2>\n\n<p>The UK REACH registration system is similar to the EU system:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The principle of \u201cone substance, one registration\u201d applies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dossiers must be submitted jointly when there are multiple registrants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The competent authority is the HSE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a>), instead of ECHA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a>In addition, transitional mechanisms were introduced to support the transition from EU REACH, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grandfathering<\/strong>: recognition of existing EU REACH registrations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DUIN (Downstream User Import Notification)<\/strong>: a notification that allowed importers and downstream users to maintain access to the UK market while postponing full registration requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UK REACH registration deadlines<\/h2>\n\n<p>One of the key aspects of UK REACH is its phased registration deadlines, which have been extended in recent years.<\/p>\n\n<p>The current deadlines for completing registrations are:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>27 October 2026:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Substances \u22651000 t\/year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">CMR substances (\u22651 t\/year)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert;
